‘Its not over until its over’, Yogi Bera’s famous words. At a time when the EU is beset with high unemployment, cutbacks in social services, and a turn to the right due to the globalization, the neo-classical liberal policies and the continued influx of new immigrants, the European prospects of Turkey are getting dimmer. ‘Turks, Nervous About European Prospects, Turn to U.S.’ is the headline of the reportage by Craig S. Smith (NYTimes, 6/11/05). It is true, but there is more to it. Turkey never turned away from the U.S. The billions of dollars in economic and military aid to Ankara, Washington’s pro-Turkish policy on the Kurdish problem and Cyprus speak louder than words. Turkey’s trajectory towards the EU was promoted by Washington, with a lot of arm-twisting. Turkey is being forced on the Europeans as a ‘Trojan Horse’ to control the direction of the EU, which has been drifting away from the US. Anti-Americanism is the new ‘global ideology’, not only in the Islamic world but in Europe as well. Most Europeans believe that Americans cannot be ‘right in the head’ to ‘put’ Bush in the White House a second time or tolerate his policies to make the 0.1% wealthy still wealthier.

Turkey can do no wrong for the White House, whether Republicans or Democrats are in charge. If Ertogan ‘sneezed’ with a cold in Ankara, the White House will send someone to be on his side, even wipe his nose. To suggest otherwise, that the White House ought not follow a ‘double standard’ on Cyprus (Kypros Chrysostomidis words) is not only politically wrong, it borders on criminality. If Washington’s more than half-a-century pro-Turkish policy on Cyprus has not taught the Greeks anything, I do not know what else would. To make this point, I will use AHI President Gene Rossides’ words (GreekNews, 6/6/05) “…AHI views on foreign policy ‘are based solely on the question of what’s best for the US, not what’s best for Cyprus or Greece or whatever.” He was serious. He made this statement more than once. Now, are we to assume that successive administrations and legislators in Washington had no idea what they were doing for 50 years? A handful of determined lobbyists will shine the light and force those in control of power in Washington to do what is right, to uphold principles? Those in the White House not only see the light, they also have their hands on the switch. They rise above their ‘principles’ and pursue their ‘real’ interests, not ‘real’ principles. It was after all the ‘human rights’ President Carter who restored the military aid to Turkey, on the premise that Turkey will be more reasonable to settle the Cyprus problem. That was thirty years ago! Are we to forget that the Kofi Annan Plan was promoted by Washington and London? It was their plan. Ertogan, Smith reported, ‘won some support from Washingon in ending the economic and political isolation of Turkish Cypriots’. Only? What about the billions of dollars the Turkish economy needs to stay afloat, now that Ertogan got himself in trouble with the (US) Iraqi policy and in worse trouble with the anti-Turkish political climate in the EU? Ending the isolation of the occupied north, does it mean selling Greek Cypriot land and homes to investors and developers and bring hordes of new settlers from Turkey to create new facts on the ground? The only words you get from the State Department are: ‘the Plan (Kofi Annan Plan) for a settlement is on the table. The Turkish Cypriots said ‘yes’. The Greek Cypriots said ‘no’. The Greek Cypriots are the problem. My response is this: as long as Turkey occupies northern Cyprus, bullies the neighboring countries, commits genocide against the 15 million Kurds, and the police beat up women on international women’s day, it would be a tragic day if Turkey were to be admitted into the European Union. The voices of leaders opposing Turkish membership for these reasons are being heard loud and clear across European continent.
The struggles of the lobbyists, Gene Rossides included, are commendable. The Cyprus struggle has been part of their lives, it not life itself for them and most Greek Cypriots. Lobbyists keep the Cyprus problem alive, even prevent things from getting worse, though I think what keeps things from getting worse are the consequences to US interests. The US bases in Greece will be kicked out by the Greek people, and there is no guarantee that the US bases in Turkey will be there much longer. So Washington is burning the candle on both ends, in Cyprus. It supports the Turkish positions, in practical terms, that is, the partitionist Kofi Annan Plan and steps to end the economic and political isolation of the occupied north (de facto partition). On the other hand, in ‘principle’, it recognized only the government of Cyprus. This strategy, the creation of ‘new facts on the ground’ will in the end render the ‘existing principles’ irrelevant, thereby forcing the Greek Cypriots to accept whatever solution is put on the table or permanent partition, which is the same thing. The pressure is and will be on the Greek Cypriots to ‘bite the bullet’, submit to realities.

The US policy in the Eastern Mediterranean is driven by geopolitical factors which transcend the Cyprus problem. Turkey’s location is strategic. Russia in the north, which the US is trying to isolate by forging economic and military links to former Soviet republics. Militarism is the driving force for these US entanglements. Turkey is also central to Caucasus and Central Asia, where most important natural gas and oil reserves of the world are located. And a projected 80 million Turkey in the EU, a ‘staunch US ally inside the EU’, along with Britain and other pro-US allies, will control the direction of the EU by isolating France and Germany. The policy makers in Washington cannot imagine Turkey outside the US orbit. Their geopolitical strategy collapses. That is why it seems difficult to determine who makes policy, whether the dog wags the tail or the tail wags the dog. This is the game Washington is playing, at the expense of Greeks. Poor Cypriots, they have been swimming with sharks, in a feeding frenzy. We are in trouble. Always were. We were in their way, their plans. We begged, we threatened, and we hurled our principles in their face. Did that get us justice, unity, and independence? We need to stop playing the Anglo-American-Turkish axis game, create our own ‘facts on the ground’ in Cyprus, with the progressive Turkish Cypriots, and inside the European Union to counteract their plans to control the destiny of Cyprus. Our goals are simple. We want to be left alone, without interference in our internal affairs, without outside military forces present on the island. We want a unified and democratic Cyprus with human rights guaranteed to all Cypriots, Greeks and Turks.
